choosing the right windows

With so many window styles, materials and colours to choose from, it can be difficult to know which is best for your home.

Let’s take a look at some of the types of glass, frames and window styles on offer.

Energy-efficient double glazing

The ideal place to start when choosing your new windows is to opt for energy-efficient double glazing.

Energy-efficient windows will keep your home warmer, eliminating draughts and cold spots. This type of glass ensures heat isn’t lost through your windows. As a result, you can reduce your energy bills.

The good news is, energy-efficient double glazing can be used in any style and age of property from traditional to modern. You also have a vast range of frames to choose from including uPVC, aluminium, steel and timber.

Fortunately, whether you’re looking for casement, sash, Georgian, tilt and turn, bay or bow, you can fit energy-efficient double glazing in them all. Energy efficient double glazing will cut condensation, reduce heat loss, and do an excellent job of silencing external noises.

uPVC frames

uPVC is a highly popular and practical choice for double glazed window frames. It’s available in an array of colours and finishes including wood effect, so you can find the most suitable type for your property.

One of the benefits of uPVC frames is that they’re easy to maintain and hardwearing. They also provide excellent insulation and can be moulded to fit pretty much any window size or shape.

Timber frames

Hardwood timber frames are solid and durable. They’re ideal for windows in period properties or character homes, giving a traditional appearance.

Timber frames will require some maintenance as they must be fully weather-proofed to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture. They may need to be treated in time to stop the timber from warping or splitting.

Aluminium frames

Aluminium is very strong and can be used for large windows. Aluminium frames are highly secure and will last for a very long time, needing little maintenance.

Insulation strips can be added to the frame to reduce any possible heat loss.

Styles of windows

  • Casement windows hinge on one side and open away from the house. They’re commonly used in properties of all sizes and periods as they come in a wide choice of styles.
  • Georgian windows are frequently used in older properties. While the traditional method of creating a Georgian window was to use individual small window panes, modern Georgian style double-glazed windows use bars running horizontally and vertically. These bars join onto the frame to create a multi-pane effect.
  • Sash windows push up vertically with a sliding sash below that slides up behind the top sash when you open the window.
  • Tilt and turn windows use a dual hinge system to allow the window to be opened inwards or from the top.
  • Bay windows are set into the curve of a wall, meaning the glass and frame must be designed to the architecture of your property.
  • Bow windows can be fitted into straight walls and are fixed to a shelf that’s shaped to hold the window. This type of windows is set an angle to give them a bow shape.
